Feeding wild birds

The feeding of wild birds in private gardens is a popular pastime in many countries around the world. In Australia, however, the practise is extremely controversial, with many organisations strongly opposed. Nonetheless, millions of people continue to offer food to wild birds in their backyards.

I have been investigating this activity for decades and have published a large number of articles on the topic, both peer-reviewed and popular. In 2018, I published the first global exploration of all aspects of wild bird feeding (The Birds at My Table). This was followed by Feeding the Birds at your Table (2019), which provides detailed advice on how to feed Australian birds safely and sustainably.

Although this is a complex and diverse topic, I have developed some simple rules or guidelines that enable the feeding of Australian birds with the least risk.

How to feed wild birds safely

  • It should be a nutritious snack not a three-course meal

Limit the amount of food provided and think about quality. Avoid any food made for people, especially anything with too much salt, fat or sugar. Use pet food, not mince. Never provide bread or biscuits.

  • Always keep the feeder clean

Remove all leftover seed and waste every day. Wash thoroughly and regularly.

  • Never feed birds in public places

You can control the supply and quality at home. You can’t in parks and reserves and the consequences can be serious. And that includes feeding ducks!

And remember

We feed birds for our enjoyment

Almost none of our feeding is needed by the birds, but it can be a wonderful experience.

Enjoy the experience!

It is a privilege to have wild creatures visit us at our homes. Be a considerate and appreciative host.
