About me

I am a Professor Emeritus at Griffith University where I’ve worked for over three decades as a lecturer, researcher and academic mentor, supervising over a 100 Honours, Masters and PhD candidates.

I have published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and ten books. I am strongly committed to communicating my studies to everyone, in both scientific and general audiences. I am often in the media and have a regular radio slot on ABC Radio (Australia), speaking about urban wildlife.

My research has been focussed on the various ways that humans interact with wildlife. This includes human-wildlife conflicts, the impacts of roads and traffic on biodiversity, the complexities of feeding wild birds and importance of connecting with nature. For my scientific publications please view my CV.

In 2021, I moved temporarily to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where I have concentrated on writing (A Clouded Leopard in the Middle of the Road 2022, Curlews on Vulture Street 2022 and Getting to Know the Birds in your Neighbourhood 2023). I am currently working on a book about what we can do to cope with the changes happening to our planet.

I have been invited to numerous writers festivals including Jaipur Literature Festival (2019), Brisbane Writers Festival (2019, 2023, 2024), Adelaide Writers Week (2024), WoMADelaide (2024) and Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (2022, 2023, 2024).
